We have discussed with you that your child will receive an injection of botulinum toxin (muscle relaxant) under general anesthesia (deep sleep).

The treatment is scheduled for …………/…………/…….……

You will receive a letter 2 weeks before the treatment stating the time you need to be present.

The treatment will take place at the AMC location in the Day Surgery Center.

The planner will call you 4 to 6 weeks before your child's treatment

The planner will call you about:

  • The date and time of your telephone appointment with the anesthesiologist (the sleep doctor).
  • The anesthesiologist will discuss your child's treatment with you and whether your child can receive general anesthesia (deep sleep).
  • No Tetanus vaccination 3 months before or within 3 months after the botulinum toxin treatment.
    • Tetanus is included in the DTP or DKTP injection that your child usually receives through the child health clinic or the youth doctor (part of the National Immunization Program).
  • Your child's weight. This is important to know so that the correct amount of medication can be administered during treatment.

The planner will check with you

  • Your address and email address.
  • If you live far from the hospital, you and your child can stay at the Ronald McDonald House. A small contribution will be charged for this.
  • Your child will require physiotherapy after treatment.
  • The physiotherapist can visit your child at home, at school, or at the day center. The planner will discuss with you whether this has been arranged.
  • Sometimes children receive a cast or splint after treatment.
  • Appointments for these are scheduled starting 2 weeks after treatment.
  • A follow-up appointment with the rehabilitation physician will be scheduled 10 to 12 weeks after treatment.
