A hospital admission for your child is a major event for both you and your child. Feelings of fear and uncertainty can play a role. It is important, if necessary or desired, that you feel supported during the hospital stay. At Amsterdam UMC we offer the possibility to be guided by means of video recordings: video interaction guidance, or VIB for short.
What is VIB
Short video fragments are made of you and your child, these will take about ten minutes during a moment of care, contact moment and/or play moment. A medical pedagogical caregiver (MPZ) that is specially trained, will look at the video fragments at a different moment with you and will show you with the fragments the signs which your child uses to get in contact with you or to keep your attention. These signs are sometimes very small and won’t be noticed without the still image. VIB is based on the positive interaction between parent(s)/caregiver(s) and the child. It is an important method and is intended to empower parent(s)/caregiver(s) in their role.
Why VIB?
When you have attention for the signals within the contact with your child, the coordination between child and parent(s)/caregiver(s) is refined, which for example contributes to bonding. This coordination is very important for your child’s development.
VIB can help you maintain or regain your self-confidence in dealing with your child. It gives you tools to support your child in the best way possible during the hospital stay.
If your child has a (serious) condition, chronic illness or disability, life can change temporarily or permanently. By looking back at images with VIB, it is possible for parent(s)/caregiver(s) to look less at the limited circumstances but more toward their child. This supports the experience and therefore the contact.
For who is VIB intended?
VIB is intended for every parent/caregiver who can use support, encouragement or reinforcement during the disease process or during hospitalization and who is open to looking at contact with the child from a different perspective.
Privacy
If you would like to use VIB, you complete a consent form. On this consent form you can indicate what the images are intended for.
Only with your permission other people than yourself and the medical pedagogical care provider involved can view the video images. After reviewing the images, you may be asked to complete a satisfaction form. On this form you can indicate how you experienced VIB.
Questions
If you would like to participate or have extra information about video interaction guidance (VIB) please ask our MPZ who work on the ward. If you don’t have contact with a MPZ you can always ask the nurse to request an appointment with MPZ.
